Italy earthquake: Day of national mourning for victims

A day of national mourning has begun in Italy for the almost 300 people who died when a powerful earthquake hit mountainous central regions.
Prime Minister Matteo Renzi is due to attend state funerals for victims from Arquata, one of the worst-hit towns.
A state of emergency has been declared in affected areas and €50m (£42m) in funds pledged for rebuilding.
The official death toll stands at 278 and no survivors have been found since Wednesday evening.
Despite this, the authorities say they will continue the search until they are certain everyone is accounted for.
Most victims were Italian, but several foreigners were among those killed, including three Britons.
Rescue efforts have been hampered by hundreds of aftershocks, with one severely damaging a key bridge into Amatrice.
"Let's hope it doesn't collapse or the town will be cut off from both sides," said Mayor Sergio Pirozzi.

Flags are due to fly at half mast across the country on Saturday as the country remembers victims of the quake.
More than 200 people died in Amatrice alone, with Arquata, Accumoli and Pescara del Tronto also hard-hit.

First funeral

Many bodies have been brought to a makeshift morgue in an aircraft hangar in the city of Rieti, where relatives have been identifying loved ones.
The first funeral for one of the earthquake's victims was held on Friday, for the son of a state official who died in Amatrice.
At least 388 people have been treated in hospital for their injuries while more than 2,000 people were made homeless.
The 6.2-magnitude quake hit in the early hours of Wednesday, 100km (65 miles) north-east of Rome.
Italy's government has been criticised for failing to prevent deaths after the 2009 earthquake in nearby L'Aquila left 300 dead.
Historic towns do not have to conform to anti-quake building regulations, which are also often not applied when new buildings are put up.
In addition to emergency funds, Mr Renzi cancelled taxes for residents and announced a new initiative, "Italian Homes", to tackle criticism over shoddy construction.
But he also said that it was "absurd" to think that Italy could build completely quake-proof buildings.

Nigerian football’s free-fall embarrassing, says Esu
I am not surprised – Okala
Coach Godfrey Esu has managed many Nigerian football clubs as far as the local league is concerned. From Julius Berger FC in Lagos, Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) in Ibadan, Gateway FC, Abeokuta, Enyimba of Aba, Crown FC of Ogomoso, Delta Force of Asaba to Bendel Insurance of Benin City, among others, Esu’s technical expertise has paved the way for many young Nigerian footballers in reaching the pinnacle of their soccer career.
But the rapid decline in Nigeria’s football, especially at the national level, has left coach Esu wondering if corruption and nepotism, which has eaten so deep into the fabric of the nation’s football administration, has affected performance on the field of play.
For the first time in Nigeria’s football history, all the male national teams, Super Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eaglets failed to qualify for African championship in one single year.

The Super Eagles, under coach Samson Siasia, lost to Pharaohs of Egypt in the race for Gabon 2017 African Nations Cup, and Nigerians, who felt that the change in technical crew from coach Sunday Oliseh to Siasia might have been responsible for the failure, pardoned the NFF board. Under this same NFF board, the Super Eagles had failed to qualify for the last edition of the African Nations Cup held in Equatorial Guinea, thereby failing to defend the title Nigeria won at South Africa 2013 AFCON.
With the dust raised over the Super Eagles defeat by Egypt yet to settle, the Flying Eagles, led by coach Emmanuel Amuneke added salt to injuries, as they were sent packing by Sudan in Lagos in race to Zambia 2017 African Youth Championship. Those who raised their voices, calling on NFF officials to wake up from their slumber were tagged ‘enemies of progress.’
And as if Nigerian football lovers had not suffered enough agonies, the Golden Eaglets, who had ruled Africa and the global state over the years, crumbled like a pack of cards last weekend in the hands of Junior Minas of Niger Republic, losing 1-3 to crash out of the 2017 CAF U-17 championship.
The shock defeat by the coach Manu Garba-led Golden Eaglets to Niger Republic means that Nigeria will not play at all men’s football competitions both in Africa and on the global next year. To many true football-loving Nigerians, including coach Esu, the free fall currently being witnessed under the present NFF board, is a big embarrassment to the nation.

“I am really bothered because the free fall of our football is becoming a big embarrassment to the nation,” Esu told The Guardian during the week. “It shows that something is wrong within the system. I have been involved in Nigerian soccer for years, and I can’t recall when all our male national football teams experienced this kind of free fall in one particular year. Something urgent has to be done to salvage the situation,” Esu said.
According to him, those administering the nation’s football at the moment lack vision. “The foundation on which our national teams are built these days is not solid enough. The head is rotten and so, no meaningful thing can come from the body.
“We don’t have a good formation and the result is what we are harvesting now. A majority of our players are on trial and error formation, and no one is ready to look into it properly because what the administrators are after is immediate results. I have sounded it loud and clear to them (NFF) over time that as long as our league matches are run based on home and away advantages, nothing good will come out of the system.
“A situation whereby referees give free penalties for some teams to win matches at all cost is killing the game, and the NFF is not doing anything about it. It sends a bad signal to the younger players even when they are on national duties that apteral, somebody will bribe the referee for us to win. I think we have to look into the area of officiating in our league. I am saying this because a majority of the players featuring for the Golden Eaglets and the Flying Eagles are from the local league.
“The failure of the Super Eagles, Flying Eagles and the Golden Eaglets to qualify for 2017 CAF championships has clearly shown to everyone that we have to look inward and address the issue properly, instead of mere scratching the surface. I know that some boot leakers will say this man does not like some people in the NFF, but sincerely speaking, the failure serves us better,” Esu stated.

While Esu is blaming officials of the NFF over the free fall of the nation’s football, former Green Eagles goalkeeper, Emmanuel Okala says there is no reason to hold the administrators responsible for the failure.
“I am not really surprised by the failure of our teams to qualify for the various CAF competitions in 2017,” Okala told The Guardian in a telephone chat. “We have been crying out on the need for government to prepare our teams very well for competitions, but they always says that there is no money to do so. And in the game of football, if you fail to prepare your team well, you must be ready to take any result that comes your way. What I mean by preparation is giving the teams quality friendly matches before any competitive game. That is missing and it will be wrong for Nigerians to hold the NFF board responsible for the failure,” Okala added.
For some other Nigerians however, the NFF board-led by Amaju Pinnick has no reason to stay in office any longer, having failed in their responsibilities. “In a country where people are held accountable for failures, these NFF board members should have been flushed out of the glass house in Abuja by now because the failure of the Super Eagles, Flying Eagles and Golden Eagles to qualify for African competitions in a single year is a big shame to this government,” a sports analyst, Kehinde Adewale, said on radio sports programme during the week in Lagos.

As Ogun APC swims in muddy waters

In this piece, SAMUEL AWOYINFA, writes on the various intrigues that may shape moves by the Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress to produce Governor Ibukunle Amosun’s successor in 2019
When the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, and some other leaders of the party visited the former governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba, in his Ikoyi, Lagos home, on Sunday April 3, 2016, not many knew that it was a sort of political calculation toward the 2019 governorship election in Ogun State.
Shortly before the 2015 general elections, Osoba had dumped the APC and founded another party, the Social Democratic Party.
The prelude to this could be traced to a split in the Ogun State chapter of the APC.
A faction of the party then had Governor Ibikunle Amosun and his supporters, while the second faction was led by Osoba.
Some of the sympathisers of Osoba then accused Amosun of running a one-man government.  They alleged that their principal, Osoba, was sidelined in the scheme of things. They said that members who worked for the enthronement of the party in 2011 were not taken care of by the governor.
These politicians also argued that some sections of the state were more favoured in appointive positions than others.
One of the party supporters and a former deputy governor in the state, Chief Adegbenga Kaka, had painted the grouse of Osoba’s camp against Amosun thus, “While some of the local government areas then were having two or three commissioners in the state executive council, some did not have one.”
But Amosun’s supporters believed that the governor had not done anything wrong. According to them, Amosun has not overreached his brief.
The Publicity Secretary of the APC in the state, Sola Lawal, had risen stoutly in defence of the appointments. He had said that “merit and qualifications were considered in the appointments and definitely it is not possible to appoint all those who worked for the party during the 2011 elections.”
The face-off between Amosun and Osoba dragged on till the March 2015 general elections. Osoba pulled out of the APC with his team of supporters to the SDP, while Amosun and his men remained in the APC.
Amosun, however, won his re-election for a second term against the SDP’s candidate and that of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Many of the APC’s candidates also won the state’s and National Assembly’s seats.
The SDP did not have any good showing in the general elections, as none of its candidates won any elective positions at both levels.
Though the return of Osoba was well publicised, has that rapprochement move settled the problems of division in the party in Ogun State?
Only the players themselves could answer this question. Observers of unfolding events have concluded that though Osoba is back in the APC, the gulf between him and the governor still subsists.
But some others have equally replied those nursing such a thought as existing only in their imagination and that there is no division of any kind or camps in the party.
Many people have said that the rapprochement may not be sustained till the 2019 general elections. They argued that the Yewa factor or what is called the Ogun West factor may come to play.
The Yewa/Awori section of Ogun State has not had any of their people elected as governor since the state was created on February 3, 1976.
Both camps had realised this, but would they reach a common stand on a single candidacy?
However, many names have started appearing on the horizon, which are bandied about by their supporters.
Some say the governor has started looking at some names as his possible successors, while the Osoba camp too has its own candidates.
Again, some political watchers in the state had discountenanced this, saying the party would produce an acceptable and credible candidate through the primary.
However, names that have started appearing as possible governor’s successor include the current Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Suraj Adekunbi; the current Chairman of Local Government Service Commission in the state, Rotimi Rahmon; the current Commissioners for Forestry and Agriculture, Kolawole Lawal; the current Senator representing Ogun West Senatorial District, Gbolahan Dada; and Mrs. Kemi Shokefun.
Amosun is believed to be considering many options and not putting all his eggs in one basket.
Unconfirmed reports claimed that he might even be looking to get his successor from Ogun-East Senatorial District. The choices still being toyed with are the current Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, Senator Lekan Mustapha and even the governorship candidate of the Unity Party of Nigeria in the 2015 governorship election, Prince Rotimi Paseda.
However, topmost on Osoba’s list is Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi. Yayi is currently representing Lagos-West Senatorial District. He had wanted to contest in the Ogun West Senatorial District during t2015 general elections, but Amosun’s camp had the upper hand.
Some still see this as being in the realm of conjectures, as it is rather too early to start such political permutations, as party supremacy may play up when the time comes.
However, the state publicity secretary of the party, Sola Lawal, has said contrary to insinuations or belief that the APC in the state is polarised into two camps, the party is one indivisible entity.
Lawal said, “The APC in Ogun State remains intact such that there are no camps or factions.
“Any thinking about camps or factions only exists in the imagination of the thinker. As far as the APC is concerned, we accommodate all views.”
Talking about names being thrown up as possible successors to the governor and that of Senator Adeola on the other hand, Lawal said the more the merrier for the party.
He noted that there are over 20 aspirants for the APC governorship seat in Ondo State and only one would finally emerge as the candidate, describing the development as the beauty of democracy.
Lawal said, “The APC is popular and accommodates all political thinking and diverse opinions. When it comes to aspirations, there is usually multiplicity of interests; the party will accommodate as many aspirants as possible.
“For example in Ondo APC, over 20 aspirants are vying for the governorship ticket, and at the end of the day, only one candidate will emerge.
“So, there could be 20 or 30 aspirants for 2019 governorship slot in Ogun State; they will all be welcomed.”
A foundation member of the APC and an opinion leader in the state, who pleaded anonymity, said it was too early to begin to talk about 2019 general elections.
He said that the National Executive Council of the party had yet to convene national congress.
This party leader however argued that it is expected that every incumbent governor may have an “anointed” person, but that party supremacy should also be considered.
He, however, added that so far, the incumbent had yet to anoint any candidate.
He said, “There are different permutations on ground. While it is true that there is party supremacy; governors will normally have their anointed candidates. But it is better for the party to allow all aspirants for the governorship ticket in the state to go for the primary.”
Meanwhile, both camps are not leaving things to chances, as they have continued to oil their political machinery.
The governor is said to have the ears of President Muhammadu Buhari, having been instrumental to the appointments of some ministers from the South-West, most especially the Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun.
The President and the governor were said to have a relationship that dates back to their days as members of the defunct All Nigeria Peoples Party.
Both parties are said to be mustering all their political influences in getting the upper hand.
As Sola Lawal said, do we agree there are no two camps but one fold in Ogun APC? Or if at all the two camps exist, would they resolve their differences and come together before the 2019 general elections?

How I killed my girlfriend with a stone

A 22-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), Ondo State, Chukwudi  Oweniwe, has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Nifemi Adeyeye, in a bush at Ilu-Abo in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Chukwudi and Nifemi were both Part Time (PT) Three students of the Department of Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT).
The suspect, who lives at Ayede-Ogbese, allegedly invited the deceased to his place from school and lured her into a bush in Ilu-Abo, where he killed her. He was alleged to have performed some devilish acts on his late girlfriend.
Paraded before reporters at the police command in Akure, the state capital, Chukwudi confessed to the crime, but denied conducting ritual acts on the victim. He narrated how he killed her. “I invited her from Owo to Ayede-Ogbese, and after introducing her to my parents, I lured her into a bush and strangled her
leaving her body in the bush,” he said. “On the second day, I asked a commercial motorcycle rider to take me to the bush where I left her and observed that she was not dead. I used a stone to hit her head and she died immediately.
“My parents became curious when they did not see her. I was arrested by the police in Ayede Ogbese, and from there, they transferred me to the Special Anti-cultism Squad in Akure.”
Asked why he killed his girlfriend, Chukwudi said that he did not know what came over him, and that it was when he killed her that he realised that he had committed a sin. He denied being a cultist.
He said that he and the deceased had dated since February, 2016 and that she has never cheated on him.
The State Police commissioner, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, said Nifemi’s remains were recovered in the bush by men of the Special Anti-cultism Squad. She said that the police are still investigating the matter to unravel the suspect’s action. She added that he would be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.
The police also paraded suspects arrested for different offences.
